Background of the Study
Emergency contraception (EC) is a vital reproductive health intervention that helps prevent unintended pregnancies when used within a specified time after unprotected intercourse. It is particularly important for young women, who may face higher risks of unintended pregnancies due to lack of knowledge, access, or social stigma surrounding contraception (Olawale et al., 2023).
In Nigeria, awareness and use of EC remain low, particularly in states like Kogi, where conservative cultural and religious beliefs influence reproductive health choices. Many young women lack accurate information about EC, leading to misconceptions about its safety and effectiveness. Additionally, healthcare providers may fail to offer proper counseling on EC due to personal biases or restrictive policies (Ibrahim & Adeyemi, 2024).
This study seeks to examine the level of awareness and utilization of EC among young women in Kogi State, identifying barriers to access and providing recommendations for improving reproductive health education.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of EC, unintended pregnancies remain prevalent among young women in Kogi State. Many women are unaware of EC options or have misconceptions about their use, often associating them with abortion or long-term infertility. Furthermore, stigma from society and healthcare providers can discourage young women from seeking EC when needed (Balogun et al., 2024).
This study will investigate the level of EC awareness among young women in Kogi State, exploring factors that influence knowledge and access. Findings will contribute to strategies for improving reproductive health education and ensuring that young women can make informed choices regarding emergency contraception.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of awareness of EC among young women in Kogi State.
To identify factors influencing access to and utilization of EC.
To examine misconceptions and social barriers surrounding EC use.
Research Questions
What is the level of awareness of EC among young women in Kogi State?
What factors influence access to and utilization of EC?
What are the common misconceptions and social barriers regarding EC use?
Research Hypotheses
Higher education levels are associated with increased awareness of EC.
Social stigma significantly reduces EC utilization among young women.
Lack of access to healthcare services negatively impacts EC use.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on young women aged 18–30 in Kogi State, assessing their knowledge and use of EC. Limitations may include hesitancy among respondents to discuss personal reproductive health experiences.
